Privacy statement
The AI Assistant sends the text of the page you are working on to a server run by the VU Education Lab in the EU, has an AI model turn it into teaching material, and sends the result back to you. Nothing about the page is stored. This page explains exactly what is processed, where, and for how long.
Draft for review by the VU privacy officer. Last updated 11 September 2026.
Who is responsible
Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), through the VU Education Lab (Onderwijswerkplaats) of the Centre for Teaching and Learning, is the controller. Contact: onderwijswerkplaats@vu.nl. VU Amsterdam's data protection officer can be reached via vu.nl/privacy.
What is processed
| Data | Purpose | Where | Kept |
|---|---|---|---|
| Text of the page, PDF, video captions or selection you choose to use | Generating the teaching material you asked for | Azure Container Apps (West Europe) and Azure OpenAI with EU data-zone processing (Sweden Central) | Not stored. Processed in memory for the duration of the request; never written to logs. |
| Your institutional email address | Signing you in (a one-time code is emailed to it), fair-use limits, and telling you which devices are signed in | Azure Table Storage (West Europe); Azure Communication Services for the email (EU data location) | Until you delete your account in Settings. |
| Sign-in codes and session tokens | Authentication | Azure Table Storage (West Europe) | Codes: 10 minutes. Sessions: 90 days, or until you sign out. |
| Daily usage counts per account (number of generations) | Fair-use limits | Azure Table Storage | Rolling; not linked to page content. |
| Aggregate statistics (generations per tool and model per day, number of active teachers) | Understanding and improving the service | Azure Table Storage | Indefinitely; contains no personal data. |
| Optional anonymous usage events (tool used, export format, error codes) with a random device id | Understanding which features are used | PostHog Cloud EU (Frankfurt) | 12 months. Off when you switch off "Share anonymous usage statistics" in Settings. Never includes page text, addresses or generated material. |
| Technical logs (timestamps, route, status, truncated IP address) | Security and troubleshooting | Azure Log Analytics (West Europe) | 30 days; security events 90 days. |
| Course profiles, saved prompts and your history of results | Convenience | Your own browser only | Until you remove them or uninstall the extension. |
What is never done
- Page content is not stored, not used to train models, and not shared with anyone but the AI service that processes it. Azure OpenAI does not use prompts or outputs for training and does not share them with OpenAI.
- Nothing is read from your browser in the background. A page is only read when you open the panel or ask for a tool, and only from the tab you are on.
- The Assistant never grades students, never processes student work you did not choose to send, and does not build profiles of students or teachers.
- No advertising, no sale or transfer of data to third parties for their own purposes.
Legal basis and your rights
Processing takes place under VU Amsterdam's public task of providing higher education and supporting its teachers (Article 6(1)(e) GDPR). You can see which devices are signed in, sign them out, and delete your account at any time in the extension's Settings. For access, correction or objection requests, contact the Education Lab or the data protection officer.
Your responsibility as a teacher
Only use the Assistant on material you are allowed to process. Do not send student work or other personal data of students; this is also VU Amsterdam's policy for generative AI in education. Review everything the Assistant produces before you use it.
Browser store disclosures
The extension requests the minimum permissions: reading the active tab when you ask, storage for your settings, and the side panel. Optional permissions (reading the page you are on automatically, YouTube, Canvas) are requested only when you turn them on. Page content is transferred only to the VU Education Lab service described above and used solely to provide the features you request, in line with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy and its Limited Use requirements.
